Contextual Tonal Variations and Pitch Targets in Cantonese
نویسنده
چکیده
With Cantonese as the target language, this study investigates the phonetic details of contextual tonal variations in disyllabic tonal sequences. It is found that the main source of F0 (fundamental frequency) contour deviation from the canonical form comes from carryover effect, which is assimilatory in nature. Furthermore, based on the Target Approximation (TA) model, an optimization problem is formulated as an attempt to unveil mathematically pitch targets of the six lexical tones in Cantonese. Finally, implications of our results on tone production and perception are discussed.

Understanding Mandarin Prosody: Tonal and Contextual Variations in Spontaneous Conversation
Tonal identity and tonal variation in Mandarin have been the focus of intensive research that has long sought to bring out the underlying causes of variations in realized pitch values. Included among the variables studied in tonal variation are syntactic, contextual, emotional, and interactional influences. In the current study, we present results of our comparative research into tonal pitch va...
متن کاملTonal Variations in Mandarin: Data from Spontaneous and Read Speech
It is well-known that tone modification occurs in read speech due to a number of different contextual effects on tonal targets, most prominently due to local tone sequencing and effects of downstepping, and that in spontaneous speech, a greater variability of tone shape has been observed as arising from a number of global discourse contextual effects. In this paper we show comparative results o...
متن کاملHow Pitch Moves: Production of Cantonese Tones by Speakers with Different Tonal Experiences
This study investigates how native prosodic systems as well as L2 learning experience shape non-native tone production in terms of tone movement, a primary cue to tone identity. In an imitation task, the six Cantonese tones were produced by four speaker groups: native Mandarin speakers (tonal), native English speakers (non-tonal), native English speakers with Mandarin learning experience (L2 to...
متن کاملEffect of speech rate on pre-low raising in Cantonese
This paper investigates the effect of speech rate on pre-low raising in Cantonese. Pre-low raising is an anticipatory tonal process where a high tone is raised when followed by a low tone (i.e. the trigger). Six native speakers of Cantonese were recorded saying a disyllable in 36 tone combinations (6 tones× 6 tones) at two speech rates (normal and slow). It was found that in slow speech pre-low...
متن کاملAuditory-Visual Integration of Talker Gender in Cantonese Tone Perception
This study investigated the auditory-visual integration of talker gender in the perception of tone variances. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate how listeners use the information of talker gender to adjust their expectation towards speakers’ pitch range and uncover intended tonal targets in Cantonese tone perception. Results from an audio-only tone identification task showed that tone c...
